Causes of Hyperpigmentation

A number of causes can contribute to hyperpigmentation, including:

- Sun exposure: Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can induce hyperpigmentation, especially in people with fair skin. In order to defend itself from future damage, the skin creates more melanin in reaction to UV exposure.

- Hormonal fluctuations: Hormonal variations, such as those seen during pregnancy, might result in hyperpigmentation. This is referred to as melasma or the "mask of pregnancy."

- Inflammatory skin diseases: As a result of inflammation, skin disorders such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis can induce hyperpigmentation.

- Injuries: Skin injuries, such as cuts, burns, and insect bites, can result in hyperpigmentation in the affected area.

- Medications: Certain drugs, such as certain antibiotics and antimalarials, might produce hyperpigmentation as a side effect.

- Genetics: Some people are more prone to hyperpigmentation simply because of their genetics.

The appearance of darker patches of skin that are different in colour from the surrounding skin is the primary symptom of hyperpigmentation. These patches might be flat or raised, and their size and form can vary.

Other symptoms of hyperpigmentation may include:

- Inconsistent skin tone: Affected skin may appear blotchy or patchy, with uneven pigmentation.

- Darkening of existing moles or freckles: Sun exposure and hormonal fluctuations can cause existing moles and freckles to grow darker and more apparent.

- Discolouration of scars: Scars that are darker than the surrounding skin may indicate post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

- Changes in skin texture: Changes in skin texture, such as roughness or bumpiness, can sometimes accompany hyperpigmentation.

- Itching or irritation: Hyperpigmentation may be coupled with itching, discomfort, or inflammation in some circumstances.
